Darren Ritchie

Team leader and diesel mechanic
Darren's main responsibilities are assisting the mechanical engineer in the maintenance and operation of all the mechanical systems inside and outside the base as well as the vehicle fleet
As team leader, Darren is responsible for the management of the team, HR, PR and he is also responsible for the base and all safety aspects.

Ewald

Ewald Ferreira

Electronic engineer
Ewald is responsible for the maintenance and operation of the communication systems at the base. This includes the satellite link as well as the HF and VHF radio networks. In addition, he is responsible for maintaining electronic equipment at the base, the local area network, the PBX and the web page.

About himself:
I love to pursue a goal and I truly love a challenge. I was absolutely flabbergasted when I heard about my successful application. I see it as an honor and a privilege to be here, and I hope to share my experiences with the world one day. I am glad to be part of the SANAE expedition this year, and hope to learn a lot from the experience. I certainly believe these travels not to be the last of its sort, as I have been to England before as well, and hope to tour some more. My hobbies are: The Guitar, Music, electronics, sports and abseiling.

Thamie Njembe

Electrical engineer
Thamie is responsible for the maintenance and operation of all the electrical systems inside and outside the base. This includes the generation and reticulation of electricity as well as providing back-up power and "clean" power for the scientific programs, communication systems and hospital.

About himself:
I am a self-motivated individual who is outdoor orientated, and adventurous. I am a self-starter who likes taking the road less traveled. I love challenges and would do anything to bring variety in my lifestyle, I am a believer, and I love life. My motto: Live life today for yesterday is HISTORY and tomorrow is only made by today’s triumph. Life Strategy: Anything not worth dying for is not worth living for. My reason for being here, is to take this less traveled road to a no mans land, with a huge responsibility to uphold, so that at the end of the mission, I wouldn’t have only enhanced my career, but I would have  also  made my lovely country proud to have a son in me.

Hansie Van Rooyen

Mechanical engineer and deputy team leader
Hansie is responsible for the maintenance and operation of all the mechanical systems inside and outside the base (this includes the ventilation, heating & cooling, fresh water, sewerage, refrigeration, fuel supply and power generation systems) as well as the maintenance and operation of the vehicle fleet.

About himself:
Ek is die meganiese ingenieur vir Sanae 42. Ek sien die jaar as ‘n groot geleentheid, en is maar te bly om ‘n stukkie van so ‘n unieke kontinent te sien. Ek gaan poog om so veel as moontlik van die plek te ervaar en sover is dit reeds ‘n onvergeetlike ervaring.

Diesel mechanic
Vumani's main responsibilities are to assist the mechanical engineer in the maintenance and operation of all the mechanical systems inside and outside the base as well as the vehicle fleet.

Matome Sekgala

Medical doctor
Matome is the team's medical doctor. He is also responsible for the base food store levels and rations.

About himself:
Dr Matome Sekgala. Medumsa Graduate, class 0f 98. Was working at 1 Military hospital in Pretoria before I decided to come down South, to the Arctics. My Hobbies are Music, Movies, Sports Fanatic and the obvious , reading.

Kobus Steyn

Meteorologist
Kobus is responsible for a number of different daily weather observations. He also maintains all the weather measurement equipment. 

About himself:
Star Sign: Libra.  I’m here to keep the balance in the team and to achieve peace and harmony in  our daily lives.  Chill out! Over-wintered Marion Island 1996-1997 (Marion 53), Gough Island 1999-2000 (Gough 45), Sanae 41 (2002) and Sanae 42 (2003).
